Pathways to Parent Leadership Program Outline

This 4-module program has been designed by and for parents to help you become more familiar with Ohio’s education system and understand your important leadership role as family member of a student. Each module takes you to a different aspect of student achievement and parental involvement.

I. Understanding Ohio’s School System

  • Learn new knowledge
    • Understand common core standards
    • Learn about performance data
    • Recognizing the link between nonacademic supports to academic achievement
    • Identify resources to support higher level learning-systems approach
  • Develop new skills
    • Analyze Ohio’s Report Card
    • Navigate the state reporting system online
  • Connection to school climate and improvement
    • Evaluate resources at the school level that support Ohio’s learning goals

II. Collaboration

  • Learn new knowledge
    • Analyzing student reading data
    • The importance of building a collaborative culture
    • How to utilize family, school, and community supports to address student reading needs
    • Recognize your personal leadership style
    • Identify communication challenges of your leadership style / how to overcome them
  • Develop new skills
    • Create a personal leadership plan that will help you become a more effective parent leader in improving reading performance gaps
  • Connection to school climate and improvement
    • Determine how your leadership style could help create a more parent friendly atmosphere at your school

III. School Improvement

  • Learn new knowledge
    • Understand the school improvement process
    • The impact of decision making at the building level
    • Analyze school report card math data
  • Develop new skills
    • Complete needs assessment by identifying barriers to student success
    • Connect parent involvement activities to school improvement math goals
  • Connection to school climate and improvement
    • Help other parents understand the school report card and school improvement process
